Strong winds from south and west forced me to stay five nights in Karlskrona. It was my first visit here, and I might return on my way back. The city (close to 70 000 citizens) is quite charming, built on several islands. It was founded as a naval base in the 17th century and is still the biggest in Sweden. Many buildings remain from this time, built in the baroque style, often side by side with modern houses in a bit random way. There are also some pictureque parts with old wooden small houses.

Today Saturday the wind was down enough for departure. Miserable downwind sailing in a big swell to start with, but after turning north into the strait between the mainland and Ă–land I could make good speed on a beam reach. Early in the afternoon the wind became so strange I gave up and steered in to the little harbour Kristianopel. For an hour or so the wind shifted from west to east and north within minutes, with periods of complete calm in between.

Kristianopel is an old fortress built when south of Sweden was under Danish rule. Less than 100 people live here today, but it is a popular tourist attraction.
